Warner Bros. has decided to demolish its iconic Looney Tunes building while generating buzz about the theatrical release of Coyote vs. Acme. However, recent news hit fans hard as HBO Max quietly removed the classic Looney Tunes animated shorts from its streaming library. These beloved cartoons, originally created between 1930 and 1969 in the golden age of animation, are now without a streaming home.

In a rather ironic timing, Warner Bros. Animation unveiled The Day the Earth Blew Up: A Looney Tunes Movie, the first fully animated Looney Tunes film, in theaters. Although this introduction of characters like Daffy Duck and Porky Pig to a new audience is exciting, the absence of their foundational cartoons online is more noticeable than ever.

Since no single streaming service offers the complete library of classic shorts, fans have to rely on fragmented collections across various platforms to stream some of their favorite Looney Tunes episodes.

HBO Max has removed the remaining 255 original Looney Tunes and Merrie Melodies short cartoons that were available on the service. Previously, the streaming platform had aired all 511 shorts, but had to eliminate 256 other Looney Tunes cartoons by the end of 2022 due to the expiration of their licenses.

While some modern Looney Tunes spin-offs are still accessible on HBO Max, they cannot wholly substitute the originals.

For those seeking to watch the classic Looney Tunes and Merrie Melodies cartoons, the options are limited. Official compilations can be found on YouTube, though watching the originals like What’s Opera, Doc? or Duck Dodgers in the 24½th Century isn’t quite the same.

At present, physical media collections like DVD and Blu-ray box sets offer the most comprehensive access to these cartoons, with Warner Bros.’ Looney Tunes Golden Collection and Platinum Collection presenting curated selections with restored picture and sound quality.

Certain cartoons may occasionally be featured on cable networks during special programming blocks, but not in a marathon format or in a way that allows viewers to watch every cartoon.

These are the top choices for streaming Looney Tunes and Merrie Melodies cartoons. If you’re eager to watch the latest Looney Tunes film, you’ll have to catch it in theaters for now. However, its streaming debut is anticipated in the future.

As of now, there isn’t a specific date for the streaming release. Nonetheless, it is set to hit Blu-ray and DVD on May 27, which should likely open up its streaming availability around that time as well.
