HP OmniBook 5 Laptop AI review: – Stay Tuned for the Lowdown!

The HP OmniBook 5 Laptop AI draws power from the AMD Ryzen AI 5 340 processor. It holds up well for everyday users with ample oomph for basic internet surfing. When it comes to tasks like checking emails or doing homework, the OmniBook’s processor is more than up for the task.

AMD’s integrated graphics have had their moments in the sun before, yet the performance of the AMD chip in this laptop’s base setup falls short of the graphics brilliance its more robust counterparts achieve. If you’re set on this laptop, I’d nudge you towards upgrading to the AMD Ryzen 7 350 processor, which dishes out a tad more graphics muscle with its AMD Radeon 860M integrated graphics.

Now, the pricing shenanigans of the HP OmniBook 5 Laptop AI are a bit of a puzzle. A quick peek at HP’s website will present you with various configurations, starting from £1,079. But let me tell you, you should never entertain the thought of shelling out that much for this laptop.

The keys on this keyboard offer a pleasing, muted sound, yet I found the actuation force a tad higher than what I’m used to on most laptop keyboards. For some, that might be a plus, depending on your typing style, but I tend to prefer a lighter actuation force.

Another noteworthy detail is the OmniBook landed on the hotter side in our thermal trials, hitting a scorching high of 103 degrees. That’s a hair short of ten degrees past our comfort threshold of 95 degrees and notably higher than rival laptops in this aspect. The potential overheating serves as another red flag for power users eyeing the OmniBook.

You do have a handful of upgrade options available at an additional cost, like picking an AMD Ryzen AI 7 350 processor, 24 or 32GB RAM, 1TB storage, and a touch display. You can also switch from Windows 11 Home to Windows 11 Pro for an extra £70.

To put things in perspective, the Lenovo Yoga 7i 2-in-1 16 managed double that score in the 3DMark Fire Strike test, with the Asus Vivobook 16 Flip nipping at its heels. Both laptops, along with the MacBook Air M4, soared way beyond the OmniBook in Civilization VI.

  • Now, here’s a heads-up
  • exercise caution when riding the Recall train owing to privacy concerns. Easily tweak your settings to disable it by heading to “Privacy & security,” then “Recall & snapshots.” Simply flick off “Save snapshots.” If you skip setting up facial recognition sign-in through Windows Hello, Recall will play nice and remain switched off by default.

That advice stems from our review setup of the OmniBook 5 Laptop AI, offering uninspiring graphics performance. It put up an average of merely 32.5 frames per second in Sid Meier’s Civilization VI: Gathering Storm and a paltry 4,627 in the 3DMark Fire Strike graphics benchmark.

The HP OmniBook 5 Laptop AI relies on the AMD Radeon 840M integrated graphics for all its graphics processing, making it clear this isn’t a gaming powerhouse.

For those not sold on Copilot, the HP AI Companion app steps into the limelight, with a tad more practical features onboard. Beyond basic generative AI tasks, like content summarization or generation, it offers tools powered by AI to dive into file analysis or fine-tune your PC’s performance.

The lackluster display experience I encountered wasn’t an outlier. To reinforce my observations, the display test scores painted a grim picture: the OmniBook managed to cover just 61.8% of the sRGB color gamut and a meager 44% of the DCI-P3 color gamut.

When it dips under £600 during a sale, the base model makes a reasonable buy; nevertheless, you should bear in mind the compromises I’ll touch upon in my full review later. I’d suggest exploring configurations with the upgraded AMD Ryzen AI 7 350 processor for a solid performance upgrade. However, it might be worth your while to check out a few slightly pricier rival laptops before committing, and I’ll delve into that shortly.

The HP OmniBook 5 surprises by skimping on ports for a 16-inch laptop, although it covers the basics most users would need:

The OmniBook suits basic tasks like web browsing just fine, but supposing you’re scouring the market for a laptop with even more mileage, you might want to consider the best laptops under £500 instead! For those seeking a workhorse for high-performance workloads or creative tasks, better off with the MacBook Air M4 or one of the top-notch 16-inch laptops.

If you’re eyeing the HP OmniBook 5 Laptop AI solely for its expansive 16-inch display, think again. The 16-inch WUXGA (1920 x 1200) IPS display offers roominess galore, yet the quality leaves plenty to be desired.

The HP OmniBook 5 Laptop AI boasts a few positives, like its spacious touchpad and robust keyboard. But when weighed against its flaws, including lackluster performance and a subpar display, it falls short. On a good day, the display may leave you underwhelmed, and the performance and battery life may be passable for a sub-£700 investment.

One of the standout aspects of the HP OmniBook 5 Laptop AI is its full-size keyboard. While not entirely out-of-the-norm for a 16-inch laptop, it still deserves a nod, especially for the inclusion of a number pad that could be a game-changer for productivity buffs.

If top-quality display is a non-negotiable for you, let me steer you away from the OmniBook and towards options like the Asus Vivobook 16 Flip or the MacBook Air M4 instead.

Given its 16-inch stature, the OmniBook sits on the bulkier side, measuring 14.08 x 10.03 x 0.73 inches and tipping the scales at 3.97 pounds. Here’s a quick rundown on how it sizes up against a few comparable laptops:

The built-in webcam on the HP OmniBook 5 Laptop AI isn’t out to win the ‘best webcam’ award, but it doesn’t hit rock bottom either. Furnishing a 1080p FHD IR camera, it offers enough clarity for your facial recognition sign-ins. Video quality ticks the box for Zoom meetings, though it may look a bit dull and grainy. But hey, it gets the job done, and you’ll be visible to your audience without a hitch.

On the Monkeytype typing test, I posted a score of 96 words per minute with 98% accuracy on the OmniBook, right around my usual average. A bit far off from my personal best of 108 words per minute with 98% accuracy, achieved on the HP EliteBook Ultra G1i AI.

We got our hands on the base model, equipped with an AMD Ryzen AI 5 340 processor, AMD Radeon 840M integrated graphics, 16GB RAM, 512GB storage, and a 16-inch WUXGA (1920 x 1200) IPS display. As I scribble these words, shortly after its release, this model is up for grabs at under £700 at Best Buy and under £600 directly from HP. This puts a whole new spin on the value discussion compared to HP’s original retail tag.

As for the touchpad on the OmniBook, it’s as spacious as the keyboard. Smooth and responsive to the touch, clicking delivers just the right amount of tactile response and travel. Personally, I found it satisfactory, but if it doesn’t tickle your fancy, there’s always the option to pair up one of the best wireless mice.

The Asus Vivobook 16 Flip and Lenovo Yoga 7i 2-in-1 16 didn’t exactly outshine it in this test, but the MacBook Air M4 stole the show from the OmniBook. So, for those who put performance above all else, the MacBook takes the cake.

Case in point: the Asus Vivobook 16 Flip outlasted it by over two hours, and the MacBook Air M4 (15-inch) outshone it by almost four hours. Surprisingly, even the Lenovo Yoga 7i 2-in-1 16, which fared poorly in other departments, managed to eke out a longer battery life than the OmniBook.

The shortcomings were clear as day the moment I powered up the OmniBook. Pages appeared lackluster, and even my wallpaper lacked the vibrancy found on other laptops or my desktop monitor. Everything seemed dull and washed out. Even watching an episode of Survivor on the OmniBook left me wanting, dampening Fiji’s tropical exuberance on this display.

HP sweetens the deal with a 1-year limited hardware warranty for the OmniBook, which you can extend through HP Care Pack.

The OmniBook’s graphics scores are indicative that it’s only cut out for running the lightest casual games. Mix in the lackluster display quality, and your gaming experience on this laptop could be a far cry from exhilarating. With that in mind, for those seeking a gaming-centric device at this price range, I’d earnestly suggest weighing the pros and cons of the best cheap gaming laptops or even pitting it against a handheld gaming PC.

  • As much as I wanted to give the HP OmniBook 5 Laptop AI a big thumbs up, there’s one significant downside and a few letdowns that sort of dampened my spirits. Compared to the cream of the crop in the laptop world, it fails to deliver the bang for your buck at its original price point. But hey, don’t lose hope just yet
  • it often goes on sale at a hefty discount, which could change the game if you have a strict budget cap for your laptop purchase. So, before hitting that ‘buy now’ button, here’s the lowdown you need.

Now, if you’re eyeing a pocket-friendly 16-inch laptop, you might believe it’s a done deal. However, we’re going to get our hands dirty and dig a bit deeper to unearth its true value.

  • Pop the hood, and you’ll find a full-size keyboard on the OmniBook 5, a boon for those productivity-minded souls out there. But here’s the kicker. The power button is situated in possibly the most inconvenient spot ever
  • nestled amid the keyboard keys, right between the print screen and delete keys.

Storage:

While the HP OmniBook 5 doesn’t dominate the battery life charts, it clocked in an impressive 11 hours and 30 minutes in our battery torture test, sufficient to see you through a full working day. But if battery longevity is a top priority for you, maybe a slight cash splash could end up landing you a better deal.

One of the USB Type-C ports needs to moonlight as a charging port. If you’ve got a bunch of peripherals to hook up to your laptop, investing in one of the best laptop docking stations or a USB Type-C hub to pair with the OmniBook 5 could be a smart move.

  • housing basic generative AI functions like text and image generation.

The OmniBook also greets you with a sneak peek of Microsoft Recall, a nifty AI aspect that snaps screenshots intermittently to “archive” all your laptop activity in case you need to trace back something later.

Cranking up “Overcome” by Nothing But Thieves on these speakers revealed a satisfactory depth and passable mids, yet the bass came across as weak and muddy, presenting a somewhat underwhelming listening experience. Casual users might find the speakers up to par, especially given their ability to pump up the volume (I never found the need to go past 50), but there is room for improvement in sound quality.

As much as I’d love to sing praises about every laptop that crosses my path, the HP OmniBook 5 Laptop AI fell short in too many areas to warrant a universal recommendation for most
