As someone who prefers pen and paper, I rely heavily on jotting down tasks and thoughts on sticky notes. These notes often find their way onto my planner or pinned above my desk for long-term reminders, creating a somewhat chaotic yet functional organizational system.
The brilliance of the Sticky Memo Ball didn’t stem from a corporate brainstorm but actually originated from the minds at the Rochester Institute of Technology. Through their annual design project Metaproject, students collaborate with companies to create products that embody the school’s ethos of “Design Is One.” This innovative approach to design pays homage to the iconic designs of Lella and Massimo Vignelli, known for their geometrically inspired modernist creations.
I hadn’t really taken into consideration the visual impact of these notepads until I came across the Poppin’ Sticky Memo Ball, a 4.5-inch dodecahedron that resembles a feminine soccer ball but doubles as a functional desk ornament. It serves as a decorative tower of sticky notes.
While I do appreciate my Notes app like everyone else, using sticky notes offers a more tangible approach. Instead of typing thoughts into an app and relying on memory to retrieve them later, sticky notes provide a physical reminder that can’t be missed. Whether it’s a reminder for myself or a message for someone else, sticky notes are my failsafe memo system, scattered throughout my space from the car to the garage.
Despite my best efforts to keep a tidy desk, the constant cycle of cleaning up only to clutter it again the next day always seems to prevail. Sticky notes are a major contributing factor to this clutter, with a variety of designs and options filling my workspace.
