Uber and Waymo are now offering their robotaxi service in Atlanta, ready for business!

The operational responsibilities for the fleet of driverless vehicles are distributed between Uber and Waymo. Uber takes charge of tasks such as vehicle charging, maintenance, and cleaning, along with managing access to the robotaxis through its app. On the other hand, Waymo focuses on overseeing the technology and autonomous operations, including roadside assistance and specific aspects of rider support.

Importantly, the pricing for robotaxi rides aligns with that of UberX, Uber Comfort, or Uber Comfort Electric rides driven by humans, ensuring cost consistency for passengers.

The unique concept of the “Waymo on Uber” service differs from other markets where Waymo operates. In this setup, robotaxis and human-driven vehicles coexist, imparting Uber users with the ability to opt for a Waymo ride by adjusting their preferences within the app.

Upon receiving a notification of being matched with a Waymo vehicle, users can choose to proceed with the driverless ride or switch to a human-driven option. Interaction with the robotaxi is facilitated through the Uber app, allowing riders to unlock the vehicle, access the trunk, and commence the journey seamlessly.

If this launch proves successful, it promises to significantly boost the business endeavors of both firms. Uber, with partnerships established with 18 autonomous vehicle manufacturers, boasting an impressive annual run-rate of 1.5 million AV trips for mobility and deliveries across its network. Waymo also stands as a key player in the autonomous vehicle space, providing 250,000 paid robotaxi rides weekly in Austin, Los Angeles, Phoenix, and San Francisco.

The inclusion of Atlanta in their service range is expected to further elevate these numbers. At present, Waymo’s fleet in Atlanta consists of a few dozen vehicles, with plans for expansion over time. Reports suggest that the shared fleet between Atlanta and Austin is on track to reach the hundreds mark.

This partnership marked its inception last September, with both Uber and Waymo announcing plans to introduce a robotaxi service in Austin and Atlanta in early 2025. In March, the two companies commenced their “Waymo on Uber” robotaxi service in Austin, with Waymo’s commercial fleet boasting more than 100 units in the city.

Uber users in Atlanta can now hail Waymo robotaxis through the Uber app. This innovative collaboration marks a new era for both companies, as they expand their “Waymo on Uber” service from Austin to Atlanta, covering an initial area of approximately 65 square miles.
