For those familiar with the action-packed Pac-Man Championship Edition series, Pac-Man Superfast delivers the same high-speed thrills. However, the game remains true to its roots, concentrating on the original maze layout and only four persistent ghosts. The traditional strategy of herding ghosts and maneuvering through narrow corridors remains vital here. Success hinges on executing flawless tactics, creating a tense, high-stakes showdown where rapid directional changes are crucial at top speeds. While the game technically supports swipe controls on mobile devices, mastering it requires the precision of a keyboard on a desktop or laptop browser (unfortunately, it does not recognize my USB controller).
I decided to share my thoughts on this game partly to challenge others to surpass my high score.

While the heart-pounding maze action is exhilarating, Pac-Man Superfast falls short due to some unconventional design decisions. The game abruptly concludes after just 13 levels, preventing players from attempting the iconic endurance runs of 256 levels that Pac-Man enthusiasts anticipate. Furthermore, an extra life is awarded every 5,000 points, making it relatively easy to progress by focusing on capturing the three high-value items that appear sporadically.

Collecting the valuable items at the bottom serves as your ticket to earning additional lives.
However, the game lacks a system to incentivize players for hoarding extra lives or surviving at high speeds for extended periods, which diminishes the appeal for top-level gameplay. Additionally, the absence of an in-game leaderboard hinders the ability to directly compete with friends or strangers.

Despite its shortcomings, I have been captivated by Pac-Man Superfast, gradually increasing my high score to over 162,000 points during coffee breaks in the past few days (I challenge all Ars readers to beat it). For fans of classic arcade thrills, Pac-Man Superfast is definitely worth a try before the inevitable fate of the “YouTube Playables” initiative joining the list of discontinued Google products.
